The ArtBox is a small experimental / improv theater space directly adjacent to and operated by the Outside In Theatre.

The design embraces the simplicity and adaptability of the black box typology. Exposed roof framing, theatrical lighting grids, black drapery, and movable seating allow the room to be continuously reconfigured to accommodate different performance formats and audience experiences. Rather than imposing a fixed arrangement, the architecture serves as a framework that empowers artists to shape the space according to their creative needs.
.
A key component of the renovation was the introduction of a new ADA-compliant restroom and accessibility improvements. Structural modifications were carefully integrated into the existing building to create an open and unobstructed performance area while preserving the character of the original structure.
Warm wood flooring contrasts with the dark theatrical envelope, creating an intimate setting where attention is focused on performance and human interaction. Overhead lighting infrastructure and technical systems are fully exposed, celebrating the mechanics of theatre-making while providing the flexibility required by contemporary productions.

The result is a highly adaptable cultural space that demonstrates how modest interventions can create meaningful opportunities for artistic expression and community engagement. Art Box provides a home for emerging artists, educators, and performers while contributing to the growing cultural ecosystem of York Boulevard and Northeast Los Angeles.
